AUSTIN, TX – The University of New Mexico Women’ Golf team finished in fifth place after shooting 295 (+7) in the final round to cap off the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at the University of Texas Golf Club. The Lobos finished with a three-round total of 882, 18 shots over par.
“I’m happy with how we finished,” said head coach Jill Trujillo.
The Lobos entered the final day of competition in fifth after carding an 11-over par on the first day of play. In the third round, UNM dropped seven strokes but managed to maintain their fifth place finish. Kent State ultimately won the tournament at 5-under-par (895), followed by Texas Tech at 3-over (867), UNLV at 9-over (873), and Texas at 11-over (875).
On the individual side, Texas Tech’s Gabby Barker was the medalist with a score of 5-under, finishing one stroke ahead of Kent State’s Taylor Kim. Barker’s card of 211 is the third lowest score at the event since 2010.
New Mexico’s own Manon Molle’ and Ingrid Gutierrez both tied for sixth place with par-even cards of 216. Of the 41 birdies shot by the Lobos, Ingrid Gutierrez picked up 12 of them, the second highest birdie total in the tournament. Freshman, Sol Lee, tacked on 10 birdies in the 54 holes of play and Molle’ and Moisand added eight a piece.
“Manon and Ingrid had a fantastic tournament,” Trujillo explained. “The team hung tough.”
“I’m proud of the way our girls fought until the end,” assistant coach Britney Choy added. “The greens were lightening fast with sharp breaks and our girls did a good job figuring out their game on a tough course.”
The Lobos will conclude the fall schedule on October 25-27 when the team will travel to Las Vegas to compete in the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown hosted by UNLV.
