Austin, TX – After two rounds of competition, the New Mexico Lobos currently sit in fifth place overall with a team score of 587, 11-over par. The 6298 yard, par 72 UT Golf Club course has proved to be a challenge on day one of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational.
“The course played difficult,” Lobo head coach Jill Trujillo admitted. “The afternoon winds died the course out quite a bit.”
At the conclusion of round 1, the Lobos sat in eighth place with a score of 298, a position Trujillo was not entirely satisfied with. In round 2 the Lobos responded by dropping nine shots from the previous round and bumping them up three spots to fifth place (587).
“Our goal is always to finish a round well,” Trujillo explained. “We did a better job in the second round, but we lost seven shots on our first round finishing holes.”
After 36 holes of play, Kent State sits in first place at one-under (575), UNLV and Texas Tech are tied for second place even with par (576), and Texas sits in third at seven-over (583).
In the individual competition, Manon Molle’ leads the Lobos with a two round score card of 144, placing her tied for 6th and even with par. Ingrid Gutierrez is trailing closely behind in 10th place with a score of 145 (+1).
Only thirteen shots off the leaders, the Lobos hope to take a few strokes off their scorecards tomorrow.
“Our consistent play will move us up the leaderboard tomorrow,” Trujillo insists.
The Lobos tee off round 3 tomorrow at 8:30 AM.
