ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico freshman midfielder Francesco Casucci has been named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week the league office announced Monday. Cassuci led UNM’s 3-2 come-from-behind win over UAB on Sunday evening with two goals and an assist.
Coming off the bench to start the second half, Casucci scored twice in less than 10 minutes to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 2-2 tie. His first goal came off a cross from Josh Goss that he was able to flick with his head past the keeper. His second goal was a picturesque free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. He curled it around UAB’s wall and into the top right corner of the goal to even the match. He added an assist on the game-winner by launching a deep cross to the far side of the six-yard box. Chris Wehan was able to touch it past two defenders to Sam Gleadle who easily beat the keeper and provide the winning tally. Earlier in the week Casucci played all 110 minutes in UNM’s 1-1 draw with Valparaiso, leading the team in distance traveled at nearly 10 miles.
He was also named to College Soccer News’ National Team of the Week on Monday. This is his first career C-USA Offensive Player of the Week award and the seventh by a Lobo this season.
