ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – UNM’s offense exploded for five goals, all of them from great build-ups as UNM took care of business with a methodical 5-1 victory over visiting Fresno State, pushing the Lobos back into third place in the Mountain West.
Statistically UNM (7-7-1, 5-2-1 MW) was outshot, but it was a bit of an anomaly. Fresno State (4-10-1, 3-4-1 MW) outshot UNM 21-14, but eight were blocked by UNM’s defenders. Of UNM’s 14 shots, eight were on net, and five went in.
Claire Lynch opened the scoring on a nifty half volley after Lindsey Guice’s through pass went to the end line, where Dylann O’Connor pulled it back and found Lynch at the six. Madisyn Olguin scored less than five minutes later in the 28th minute after cruising through the six and touching a pass from Brooke Webster into the short side.
Korynn Blanksma then took an Olguin pass for a short breakaway, parking one in the far corner for a 3-0 Lobo lead.
UNM upped it to 4-0 in the second half when Guice hit a laser from 25 yards out into the upper corner, and Quiny Slora followed 10 minutes later off a perfectly place long cross into the box from Victoria Archuleta.
The only downer for UNM was losing the shutout with 2:24 left when Myra Delgadillo took a pass in the box and hit a shot past Laura DeMers, who had one save in relief of starter Cassie Ulrich. Ulrich played the first 80:29 and registered six saves, including a breakaway in the second half.
