ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team held its first high school coaches clinic under head coach Yvonne Sanchez and it was a success.
With the expectation of only having 25 participants, over 80 coaches, from all over the state of New Mexico, came out to WisePies Arena aka The Pit to participate and learn from the Lobos.
“It’s a great win-win situation,” said Sanchez. “It’s important to build those relationships because we are a state school. Our obligation is to take care of the state. There are some really good coaches out there that do a great job. They learn from us and we learn from them.”
The Lobos conducted two practices that lasted about two hours each with one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The early practice consisted of offensive drills (passing, shooting, 5-on-5) while the afternoon was spent working on defensive skills. Between the two sessions, the entire women’s basketball staff sat down for some round table activity, giving the participants a closer look inside Lobo Basketball.
“Our kids loved it too, and I think to showcase our kids, to see what we have this year, was a lot of fun because they (particpants) might bring their teams back to a lot of our games.”
New Mexico opens up the season with an exhibition game versus Western New Mexico on November 4, but fans can get a first look at the 2015-16 squad on October 16 at the annual Lobo Howl from 6-9 p.m. Season tickets are currently on sale. Call 925-LOBO or visit the ticket office, located at the northeast side of The Pit.
