2015-16 Schedule
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team started its 2015-16 journey Monday afternoon with an energetic practice.
The Lobos started out with warm ups and stretching before getting into the basics and fundamentals of the game. Free throws and some conditioning was mixed in before hammering some offensive and defensive drills in the last hour of practice.
“We learned a lot of stuff and went through a lot of things,” said head coach Yvonne Sanchez. “They did a nice job and they were really excited. In this first week, we want to get better and clean up the little things. You know, you really have to start with fundamentals and we’re doing that. The other stuff will clean up. Offensively, the screens, the cuts, being in the right spot and the shots will come. Defensively, the same thing, hands up, how to play screens, how to talk to each other and boxing out.”
There are a few fresh faces out on the floor this season, including three freshmen in Jannon Otto, Emily Lines and Jaisa Nunn. But a fresh face returning back to the hardwood is Whitney Johnson, who has spent the past two seasons on a mission in Mexico.
“Whitney is having a good time and the freshmen are having fun. They have done a really nice job. So it’s “how are we going to play so many people?” I want to play a lot of people and I think we can. There isn’t one person right now that I am hesitant to play.”
The Lobos will practice the next two weeks before their first event, which will be the Lobo Howl on October 16 from 6-9 p.m. The first game of the season will be an exhibition match up with Western New Mexico on November 4.
