ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team gears up for the upcoming season with high expectations. Entering her ninth year at UNM, Lobo head coach Jill Trujillo is excited to see how the year will play out. Although the Lobos battled to finish second in the 2014-15 Mountain West Championships, Trujillo is looking for more consistent play from her team this season.
“One of the most important things when you have a new season is to remember that the past is the past and move forward,” Trujillo explained.
While the Lobos have no seniors said on their roster, the team has never suffered from a lack of leadership. As one of the younger teams in the nation in previous years, the New Mexico underclassmen are challenged to step on the course each day and make a big impact. This year is no exception.
“Our freshmen are nice and hungry, just like you want them to be,” said Trujillo. “They are playing well and giving everyone a run for their money. It’s really fun to watch.”
Unlike last year, however, there are a several Lobos in the lineup who have some veteran experience. Last season standout sophomore, Manon Mollé, earned the title of Mountain West Conference Individual Champion as well as an individual bid to the NCAA Regionals. This success came after a semester ending foot injury in the fall.
“Mollé broke the sophomore record last year and played very well at a regional event but didn’t quite make it to nationals,” Trujillo explained. “She’s got very high expectations for herself.”
Along with Mollé, fellow juniors Katerina Jaeger, Eva Saulnier, and Kalyn Thayer return to the course eager to play after productive summers. Rounding out the returning lineup are sophomores Ingrid Gutierrez and Alexandra Moisand, both of whom are expected to compete for a lineup position. The Lobos have three fresh faces this year including Emma Edwards, Sol Lee, and Darien Zachek.
“Our biggest challenge this season will be figuring out our top five. They are all playing so well and that’s a good problem to have,” Trujillo boasted. “We will have to see how team dynamics go together. We had such a tight knit team last year.”
The Lobos will kick off their season on September 14th in the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational on their home course. There are eighteen teams in the field including the defending NCAA Champions, Stanford University.
“We are starting off with a really difficult tournament in our home event,” admitted Trujillo. “We’ve got our work cut out for us, but I have no doubt that this team is up for the challenge.”
