New Mexico Game Notes | New Mexico State Game Notes | Mountain West Weekly Notes
The University of New Mexico Lobos (2-2) will take on the New Mexico State University Aggies (0-3) in the final non-conference game for UNM this season in the Rio Grande Rivalry game. New Mexico is coming off a solid outing in which all three phases were clicking in a 38-28 win over Wyoming that was not as close as the final score would indicate. New Mexico State is coming off a bye week which followed a pair of heartbreaking losses as they lost to Georgia State 34-32 after missing two extra points and a last second field goal and then lost to UTEP 50-47 in overtime after leading by 14 twice in the fourth quarter.
The Coaches:
The University of New Mexico Lobos are coached by Bob Davie, who is 13-28 in his fourth season with the Lobos, and he is 48-53 overall in his ninth season. He spent his first five seasons as a head coach manning the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. For the Aggies, they are coached by Doug Martin in his third year with the program. Martin is 4-23 with New Mexico State and 33-76 overall in his 10th year overall as a head coach. He previously coached for seven years at Kent State, going 29-53.
Series History:
The two teams have met 105 times previously, and New Mexico leads the series 69-31-5, winning the last three. That three-game UNM winning streak comes on the heels of a three-game New Mexico State winning streak. Prior to that, UNM had won 33 of the previous 40 (losing six and having one tie).
New Mexico won the last meeting in University Stadium by a 66-17 count. Last year UNM won in Las Cruces 38-35 when Lamar Jordan came off the bench after injuries to Cole Gautsche and back-up Clayton Mitchem to engineer two fourth quarter scoring drives, the last finishing with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Reece White with 35 seconds left.
