ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The 2015 Cherry-Silver meet for the UNM swimming and diving team came down to the final event. Cherry clung to a four-point lead heading into the 6×50 freestyle relay. Silver held a lead throughout the race, but Cherry came back in the final leg to win by 0.45 seconds. However, the final swimmer for Cherry was disqualified for an early take off. That gave Silver a 562-539 win and bragging rights heading into the start of the season.
“I thought we had great races, especially for the first outing of the season, so I’m very happy,” head coach Kunio Kono said. “The girls are training hard and having fun, so we’ll be ready to go in a couple weeks when the real season starts.”
Abigail Wheeler and Allyson Concepcion were a couple of stars for Silver. Wheeler won both the 100-yard IM and 100-yard butterfly and placed second in the 200 fly. Concepcion, meanwhile, swept both the one-meter and three-meter dive events.
“I think we have good depth this year,” Kono said. “Distance and sprint, we have good balance. A lot of girls stood out today and I am really excited about our balance.”
The Lobos open their season with a three-day trip through Colorado in early October. It starts at Colorado State on Oct. 8, continues the next day at Air Force, and concludes on Saturday, Oct. 10 at the University of Denver.
