GREENVILLE, S.C. – The New Mexico Lobos dropped to fifth place today in the Lady Paladin Invitational, finishing round two with a team total of 588 (+12). With a daily score of 297 (+9), the Lobos tacked on six additional strokes from their total in round one. Wake Forest currently leads the field with a score of four-over. On their flank are the Missouri tigers with a team score of five-over.
“We gave away a few shots today,” Lobo head coach Jill Trujillo admitted. “The course was playing a little tougher today with the swirly wind and the greens were pretty tricky.”
The 10+mph winds sweeping across Greenville this afternoon were certainly an unwelcomed guest. As any golfer knows, the slightest breeze can wreak havoc on even the most perfect shots.
“The wind made it difficult because I kept being in between clubs,” explained freshman Sol Lee. “I just had to adjust to that as best I could.”
Lee led the Lobos on the day with a par-even score of 72.
“72 is a good score, but there were some things I couldn’t control,” said Lee. “I felt like I gave away a couple of strokes, but now that I look back on it I made some pretty awesome putts so it kind of balances itself out.”
Eva Saulnier and Sol Lee are currently leading the Lobos with two-day totals of 147, three strokes over par. Saulnier carded a 75 (+3) in round two.
“My drives were not straight at all today, so hopefully tomorrow will be better,” said Saulnier. “My chipping was really good though, so I had a lot of even shots.”
Alice Hewson of Clemson University continues to dominate the individual competition with a two-day total of 140 (-4).
While the mischievous wind may have threw a wrench in New Mexico’s master plan, the Lobos are not discouraged going into round three of the Lady Paladin Invitational.
“I’m excited for tomorrow because I have a feeling that I’m going to shoot under par,” Lee beamed.
Only eight shots off from the leaders, the Lobos are still in the hunt for a medal.
Ingrid Gutierrez will lead off round three for the Lobos at 9:00 a.m. on hole 6B.
