Davie Announces Scholarships for Albuquerque’s Russo and Walsh
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Bob Davie, entering his fourth year at the helm of The University of New Mexico’s football program, has announced that a pair of Albuquerque natives, John Russo and Michael Walsh, have earned scholarships. Both were walk-ons to the program, and both are currently juniors.
Russo, from Eldorado High School, came to UNM in 2012 and redshirted before playing the past two seasons. Overall in his career, he has played in 16 games, including all 12 last year. A wide receiver his first two seasons, Russo made the switch to safety last spring. He has been a stalwart on special teams for UNM over his career.
Russo served as the New Mexico Man on November 8, 2014 against Boise State. He now becomes the seventh New Mexico Man to join the program as a walk-on and eventually earn a scholarship.
Walsh, from La Cueva High School, came to UNM in 2013 after starting his career at Wayland Baptist University in Texas. After redshirting in 2013, he saw first action as a Lobo last year. Walsh is a tight end but was a safety at Wayland Baptist. Walsh earned top-10 Hard Hat status during Spring 2015 Camp for his work in the Athletic Performance lab. Walsh isn’t the first from his family to earn a Lobo scholarship as his grandfather James Johnson played basketball at UNM from 1962-66.
“Walk-ons are so important to our program,” said head coach Bob Davie. “Both of these young men have done a great job on the field and in the classroom, and they have great representatives of our football program in everything they do. I’m proud to put both of these young men on scholarship.”
