ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – It was another opponent ranked in the top 15 nationally for the Lobo Women’s Soccer team on Sunday after facing top-ranked Florida State on Friday evening. New Mexico again battled and gave Texas Tech everything they could handle before dropping the 1-0 decision. The Lobo attack showed increased intensity as UNM out-shot the Lady Red Raiders 15-11 for the match.
New Mexico looked to have an early goal when sophomore Claire Lynch fired a left-footed shot in the tenth minute that forced a diving save by TTU’s Lauren Watson. Lynch put a second shot on frame just ten minutes later, forcing another save by Watson.
The day’s only goal came in the 13th minute when Texas Tech’s Caity Heap played a long pass to Janine Beckie ten yards outside the box. Beckie took the pass in stride, drew out Lobo goalkeeper Cassie Ulrich, and slotted away a shot at the far post inside the 18-yard box.
UNM unleashed a flurry of shots off the feet of Lindsey Guice, Madisyn Olguin and Dylann O’Connor minutes later deep in Texas Tech territory but were unable to find an equalizer.
The Lobos and Red Raiders entered halftime even in shots at seven while UNM held a decisive 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
New Mexico kept up the offensive pressure in the second half as Alyssa Coonrod tallied a shot on goal from the left side of the box in the 76th minute. Midfielder Claire Lynch was also a part of the Lobo offense in the second half. The Albuquerque native nearly tied the match in 87th minute when her shot off a right-to-left cross missed high.
