Lobo Faithful:
One week of preseason in the books, one exhibition down, Khouri back from Jamaica….player’s getting healthy…feeling good about this team! Four high energy days of training led up to Saturdays opening exhibition vs the Air Force Academy. I really like our team’s cohesiveness, our leadership and the boys tremendous mentality. It’s evident that everyone worked hard over the summer and a great deal of effort went into individual and team preparation.
We opened the Air Force match maturely and created quality chances early on. Good ball speed and intelligent decision making. We carried the contest early, but failed to convert a penalty kick and a couple of quality looks. Lightning struck 22 minutes in…literarily… and the match was delayed for 40 minutes. Coming off the delay was a challenge, but we continued to play at a high level….nothing in the net and 0-0 heading into intermission. Our supporters are INCREDIBLE! 1200 in the stands taking part in our first exhibition with ominous skies overhead. I can’t say enough about the Lobo Faithful. We often talk about “synergy” with our team. The players in the stands…1200 team members on Saturday night….gave everyone energy. We started the second half strong and were rewarded in the 56th minute with a nice piece of finishing from Nick Rochowski. Several shots hit the woodwork and it was only a matter of time to see another find the Air Force net. We doubled our lead in the 84th minute, when Chris Wehan found Matt Dorsey for our second. A soccer match requires 90 minute of concentration and focus. Excellent play for 89:38….22 seconds remained in the match and we lost our focus for a brief second. Long throw in and a scramble in front of our net. Nice finish and the match ended 2-1 Lobos. Need to play until the final whistle. We will learn from this mistake and will be the better for it.
We get right back at it Wednesday night, August 19th at 7:00 pm vs Grand Canyon University at the Lobo Soccer Complex. Admission Free of Charge. Should be a another quality test. Patrick Khouri will see his first minutes of the season after a successful stint with the Jamaican Olympic team and everyone should be well rested. Looking forward to an even bigger crowd for our final home exhibition.
