New Mexico Leads Mountain West in Scholar-Athletes

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Days after breaking Lobo academic records and leading the Mountain West Conference in Academic All-MW selections for the spring, University of New Mexico student-athletes have topped the conference in another honor in the classroom. New Mexico had 112 Lobos named MW Scholar-Athletes for the 2014-15 academic year, which was the most among all member institutions.

The MW Scholar-Athlete award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in a Mountain West-sponsored sport.

UNM also led the MW in this distinction last academic year with 117 award winners and has produced 229 in the last two seasons. The University of New Mexico is responsible for 16.6 percent of the total number of MW Scholar-Athletes in the conference in the last two years.
