ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico freshmen Carl Stajduhar and Cory Voss were named National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Freshmen All-Americans Monday, which is the second such honor for each player. Stajduhar was named to the first team, and Voss named to the second team.
Stajduhar set a new UNM freshman record for RBIs with 53 and led the Lobos in RBIs, hits (75), doubles (21), home runs (nine), total bases (127), multi-hit games (22) and multi-RBI games (13). He was second on the squad in runs (45) and slugging (.545) and hit .322 while being the only Lobo to appear on all 59 contests this season, including 58 starts. His 21 doubles tied for the national freshman lead. He reached base in a team-best 21 straight games from April 8 to May 15. He was named the Mountain West Player of the Week on May 11, and he was named to the Mountain West All-Tournament Team after hitting .353 with eight runs, two doubles and two home runs during UNM’s five games in Reno, Nev., last month.
Voss was named the Mountain West Co-Freshman of the Year after hitting .345 with 14 doubles, five triples, five home runs, 35 RBIs and 34 runs. He led the Lobos in slugging at .546 and tied for second on the team with 21 multi-hit games. Among all freshmen catchers in the NCAA he ranked second in batting and third in both slugging and on-base percentage (.431).
UNM was one of just three teams in the nation to have multiple players honored. Oregon State, which was a No. 2 seed in the NCAA, led the way with three players, and LSU, which is on its way to the College World Series, also had two.
