Lobo Athletics: 59 Spring Grads, 88 for Academic Year

Lobo Pride Passes Are Now On Sale!Lobo Pride Passes Are Now On Sale!

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — There’s a lot of numbers you can associate with the University of New Mexico.  Thirty-four.  That’s the number of conference championships won over the last four years.  Twenty-two.  That’s the number of sports.

Perhaps the best numbers are 59 and 88.  That’s the number of spring graduates for UNM Athletics, and the total number of graduates for the 2014-15 academic year.

When you look at the graduating student-athletes, there’s a story behind every one of them.  Sadly, we can’t get into every story for each student-athlete, but many of the graduates will be back to work on their Master’s degrees, like starting offensive lineman Garrett Adcock.  Mateja Robnik was an NCAA National Champions in the giant slalom in 2015, winning that title just two months prior to earning the most important title of all; graduate.

Some graduates were absent, such as James Hignett and Mitch McDaniels for men’s tennis and Natasha Smith for women’s tennis.  The NCAA Tournament wouldn’t wait, and while they couldn’t walk across the stage, they represented their university in the national championships for the first time since the aughts ended.

Some student-athletes had graduation and a game in the same day.  Carrie Sheehan picked up a diploma and a softball all in the same weekend, never having to move her car.  Same for baseball closer Jake Cole.

Some graduates will head out to continue their dreams, like Deshawn Delaney, who will play in the NBA Summer League in hopes of realizing his NBA dreams.  Some will stay in town like Christian Otto, who came from Waltersdorf, Germany, competed in four NCAA championships, earned a bachelor’s and a master’s and will work in the Albuquerque Financial District.

Regardless of where these graduates go, or where they work, one thing is true for all of them.  All 88 are Lobos 4 Life, and will represent the Cherry and Silver well beyond their time in athletic competition.
