BOISE, Idaho – The No. 42 University of New Mexico men’s tennis team tallied a dominating 4-1 road win over the Boise State Broncos on Friday afternoon allowing the Lobos to improve to 3-0 in Mountain West Conference action.

“Wins aren’t easy to come by in this league, especially on the road,” interim head coach Bart Scott said. “The guys were focused from the start and took care of business. Ben (Dunbar) and I have so much confidence in this group.” 

UNM took a 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point. Augustus Ge and James Hignett claimed the Lobos’ first win as they defeated Abe Hewko and Garrett Pattion 6-4 in the No. 2 spot. Hayden Sabatka and Bart Van Leijsen clinched the point with their 6-4 victory over Lewis Roskilly and Thomas Tenreiro in the No. 1 position.

Mitchell McDaniels and Samir Iftikhar were up 5-4 over Brian Foley and Toby Mitchell in the No. 3 spot when the point was claimed.  

The Lobos also came out strong in singles play. Jorge Escutia put the score at 2-0 with his win over Roskilly 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 6 position. The Broncos got on board with a victory in the No. 1 spot as Patton posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Iftikhar.

McDaniels came through with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Mitchell in the No. 3 spot putting the Lobos at the position to win. Sabatka defeated Tenreiro in two sets 6-3, 7-6 (4) to clinch the match for UNM.

Van Leijsen was battling Foley in the No. 4 spot when the match was claimed. Hignett was in a third set with Hewko.

UNM is now 15-8 on the season.

The Lobos close out the weekend with another road match against Utah State on Sunday. The match is set to start at 11 a.m. MT in Logan, Utah.

“The focus is now on Utah State,” Scott said. “They are very tough at home and are having a quality season, so we expect a great match.”
