SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of New Mexico softball team put up two runs on the board but it wasn’t enough to claim the series as San Diego State brought its power to the plate to defeat the Lobos 10-2 in six innings on Sunday afternoon at the San Diego State Softball Stadium.
SDSU used two home runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead over the Lobos. The Lobos responded in the top of the fourth with a run. Shelbie Franc led off the inning with a triple to right center. Two outs later, she scored on Karissa Haleman’s single to right center.
The Aztecs came up with two more runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-1 lead over the Lobos.
The Lobos responded again but with only one run in the fifth, their final run of the game. Chelsea Johnson single to right center and moved to second on a hit by pitch from Michala Erickson. The two advanced on Gabrielle Stacey’s sacrifice bunt and Johnson then scored off Brandi Heimburg’s ground out to second base.
SDSU used a run in the fifth and four runs in the sixth to cut the game short to six innings.
Krissy Fortner took the loss in the circle, dropping to 8-5 on the season. She allowed three runs off four hits in 2.2 innings. Carrie Sheehan came in relief and allowed seven runs off seven hits in three innings of work.
At the plate, the Lobos pounded out six hits. Haleman and Heimburg had the only two RBIs while six Lobos had one hit apiece.
The Lobos drop to 25-23 on the season and 9-9 in the Mountain West. SDSU improved to 31-18 overall and 15-6 in the MW. New Mexico returns home for the final two weeks of conference play, playing host to Boise State next weekend. The first game of the series will be Friday at 5 p.m. MT.
