ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After taking a break from the game of softball, the University of New Mexico softball team will return to action this weekend as it travels to San Diego State for a tough road series.

The Lobos played New Mexico State last week on April 14 but took a break from the game last weekend. After the tough 4-2 loss to NMSU, the Lobos practiced for two days and then took the Mountain West “bye” weekend off to re-energize for the final three weeks of play.

This week will be a tough challenge and crucial series for the Lobos as they will be going up against the 2014 Mountain West Champions. The Lobos will look for wins to stay in the top four of the conference and also look for their fifth series win of the season.

SDSU comes into the series ranked third in the conference with a 13-5 record. They were picked to finish second behind Fresno State in the preseason poll.

Last weekend, San Diego State traveled to Colorado State and claimed the series 2-1. After being postponed a day, the Aztecs claimed game on 9-7 but fell in game two 10-9. They bounced back to win the series with a 8-4 finale win.

Overall, the Aztecs are 30-17. The first game of the series this weekend will be the 60th meeting between the Aztecs and the Lobos. Last season, the Lobos fell in the first two games of the series at home but rebounded to win game three.

SDSU has one of the best pitchers in conference and the Lobos will most likely face her all three games. Erica Romero has a 3.31 earned run average and 28-14 on the season. In 245.1 innings of work, she has struck out 137 batters and she holds he opponents to a .299 batting average.

On the offensive side, the Lobos will look to contain Lorena Bauer. She is hitting .413 on the season with a team-high of 57 hits. She has recorded 12 doubles and 14 home runs with 33 runs scored in 44 games started. She has a .819 slugging percentage.

As a team, SDSU is hitting .307 but is giving up 4.06 runs per game to its opponents.

The Lobos will look to come in fresh to the series after the weekend off. For the season, the Lobos are hitting .292 on the season with junior Mariah Rimmer leading the way with a .384 batting average.

Krissy Fortner still leads the way in the circle for the Lobos with a 2.83 earned run average. She is 7-4 on the season and the Lobos will look to continue utilizing her this weekend. Lauren Soles has the most wins on the team with eight.
