ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico men’s tennis head coach Bart Scott has announced that Ricky Hernandez Tong has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Lobos in the fall of 2015.
“We’re really excited to announce the signing of Ricky to become the newest Lobo,” Scott said. “Coach Dunbar, myself, and the rest of the Lobos are really looking forward to working with him in August. He has a huge ceiling, yet is already quite an accomplished player.”
Hernandez Tong (Cardiff, Wales/St. David’s Catholic College) is an international standout player who has been ranked as high as number one in the Great Britain junior rankings. Aside from having a strong tennis background, Scott feels confident in the competitive mindset that Hernandez Tong brings to the court.
“The future is bright here at UNM with the number of young and talented players on our roster,” Scott said. “Ricky will push our guys and our guys will push Ricky, which is exactly what they all need developmentally. They all need to be surrounded by great players day in and day out. He understands team play and wants nothing more than to help us reach our team goals.”
Hernandez Tong is the first to sign with the Lobos for the 2015-16 season.
