ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After leading the University of New Mexico softball team to its first-ever win over Nevada and its third straight Mountain West series win, sophomore third baseman Jasmine Casados has been named Mountain West Player of the Week for the first time this season. It is the third time in her career she has been honored.
“Jasmine was dominating this week at the plate,” said head coach Erica Beach. “She came in clutch for us on more than a few occasions and really helped us to win our third series in a row. I am so incredibly proud of her. She puts in so much work and has stepped up for us in a big way.”
Casados led the Lobos at the plate, going 5-for-8 (.625) with a double, a triple, a home run and four walks. She had a total of three RBIs which included two on Thursday that helped the Lobos to their first-ever win over Nevada with a 4-3 win.
In the second game of the weekend, Casados went perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double, a home run, two walks and two runs scored.
For the weekend, she had a team-leading slugging percentage of 1.375, along with a team-leading .750 on-base percentage. Casados was also solid on defense as she did not have an error in eight chances at third base.
For the season, Casados is second on the team with a .404 batting average. She has a total of 40 hits on the season with a team-best 33 RBIs. She is second on the team in home runs with five and has a team-leading .636 slugging percentage.
The Lobos are 22-15 on the season and is tied for second in the Mountain West with a 6-3 record, which is the best MW start since the 2007 season. This week, UNM will face its toughest challenge yet as it heads to Fresno State for a mid-week, three-game series, starting Tuesday.
