ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The No. 42 University of New Mexico men’s tennis is back on the road this weekend for a pair of conference matches against Boise State and Utah State.
“It will be a tough weekend on the road, but Ben (Dunbar) and I are confident in our guys,” interim head coach Bart Scott said. “We all have jobs to do and we will all go out there and do our best. We have a lot of respect for all the teams in our conference and Boise state and Utah State are no exception.”
No. 42 New Mexico, 14-8, 2-0 MW
The Lobos picked up two big wins last weekend over conference opponents Fresno State and Nevada. UNM’s successful conference-opening weekend put them at the top of the Mountain West standings and allowed the Lobos to move up to No. 42 in the ITA team rankings. Senior Sam Iftikhar, ranked No. 61 nationally, was named MW Men’s Tennis Player of the Week this week for his contributions to the Lobos’ victories over the Bulldogs and the Wolf Pack.
Boise State, 7-13, 1-1 MW
UNM kicks off the weekend with a match against Boise State on Friday at 5 p.m. MT at the Appleton Tennis Center. The Broncos are currently 7-13 overall, 4-5 at home, and 1-1 in conference action. BSU tallied a 5-2 victory over UNLV early this season, but fell to San Diego State 4-3 in their most recent conference match.
Utah State, 14-7, 2-1 MW
The Lobos will close out the weekend with a match against the Utah State Aggies in Logan, Utah at 11 a.m. MT on Sunday. The Aggies are right behind the Lobos in the MW standings as they currently hold an impressive 14-7 overall record, 5-1 at home, and 2-1 in conference play. USU has tallied MW wins over San Diego State and Fresno State and recently fell to UNLV 5-2 on the road. The Aggies have lost their last three matches, all against ranked opponents (No. 56 Oregon, No. 59 San Francisco, No. 72 UNLV).
“Boise State is the next match on our schedule, therefore it is the most important match of the season right now,” Scott said. “Once it’s done, win or lose, Utah State becomes the most important match for us. All season long we’ve taken it one match at a time and this weekend will be no different.”
A full recap and results will be posted after each match on golobos.com.
