Lobo Gavin Green is Mountain West Men’s Golfer of The Week

It’s probably about time that New Mexico’s Gavin Green built his own trophy room.  Maybe that will come down the professional road.

Green, a two-time All-American for UNM, was named the Mountain West’s Men’s Golfer of The Week on Wednesday after tying for the individual win at this week’s Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate hosted by South Carolina.

Green, the defending Mountain West individual champion, was named the Mountain West Golfer of The Month twice in the fall for the months of September and October/November.

His win at Hootie was his third of the 2014-15 season and has him a win away from tying the program’s record of four wins in a season – held by Green and Tim Herron (1992-93).  Green already held the program’s career mark with wins and now has bumped that bar up to eight wins.

Green also this fall season won the William H. Tucker title at the UNM Championship Course to become the first player with three Tucker titles.  He won – for the second time — the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic held in El Paso in November.  He also was runner-up at the Gopher Invitational held in September.

Green was clutch at the South Carolina event and used birdies on No. 16 and No. 18 to pull into a tie for medalist honors.

“It was a clutch finish for him,” said Lobo Golf Coach Glen Millican.  “He got off to a great start, but he knew he had to birdie two of the last three holes in order to get into a tie for the lead and he did it.  He hit two great iron shots into the greens and then made two putts.  He is really playing well, but that’s what you expect from Gavin.”

Green’s card in South Carolina also was needed for the Lobos to finish runner-up to No. 5 ranked South Carolina.  The question going into the tournament wasn’t so much who would win, but which of the talented teams would end up breathing down the Gamecocks’ neck.

The Lobos did the breathing – besting GRU Augusta by two shot and beating Virginia by three shots.

Green is a 6-foot-1 senior from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor
