RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – A day after earning a tie with the Kansas Jayhawks, the University of New Mexico women’s golf team left no doubt in their convincing win over conference foe Nevada in the third day of the SDSU Farms Invitational. The trio of Ingrid Gutierrez (4 and 3), Eva Saulnier (5 and 4) and Alexandra Moisand (4 and 2) gave the Lobos match play advantages while Manon Mole finished all square with her Wolf Pack counterpart.
The Lobo tandem of Saulnier and Gutierrez came out firing on all cylinders in the early action against their Wolf Pack counterparts. Guitierrez took care of Nevada’s Celyn Khoo with a trio of birdies on par 4’s at holes 13, 1 and 6. The freshman defeated Khoo 4 and 3 in 15 holes to give UNM one of its three match play victories over the Mountain West rival.
Saulnier also found success on the front nine with birdies on the first and fifth holes. She had recorded two birdies in the course’s first six holes the day before against Kansas. Saulnier took care of Bethany Wurster of Nevada 5 and 4 through 14 holes.
The third prong in the Lobo attack for the day was Alexandra Moisand who used an eagle on the par 5 18th hole for the third head-to-head victory for New Mexico on the morning. Moisand used the one-two punch of a birdie on the 17th hole and the eagle on the 18th hole to pick up her second match play victory in as many days. Her eagle was just the second in three days of action to be posted on the final hole of the course.
Manon Molle earned a hard-fought tie for the second consecutive day while Katerina Jaeger continued her team’s strong play on the front nine by birdying the second hole. It was the 11th birdie posted by the Lobos on the first six holes of the course.
New Mexico will continue play on Wednesday with a match-up against UC Irvine.
