Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. – The University of New Mexico women’s golf team faced the Kansas Jayhawks in the second day of match play action in San Diego State’s Farms Invitational. UNM got a pair of wins from Ingrid Gutierrez and Alexandra Moisland to tie 52nd ranks KU. New Mexico’s Manon Molle was all square in her match-up with Kansas’ Minami Levonowich for the day. The Lobos and the Jayhawks were just part of a loaded field in southern California that included five programs ranked in the top 25 nationally.

Eva Saulnier, the sophomore from France, sank two birdies on the first six holes of the course in her matchup with Gabriella Dimarco from Kansas and also had a birdie on the 12th hole.  Sophomore Katerina Jaeger gave the Lobos a birdie on 16, which would prove to be the second-toughest hole of the day.

Coach Trujillo’s Lobos started out strong on the second day of action as the trio of Gutierrez, Moisand and Saulnier were all one up through their first three holes. Moisand would push her advantage over Kansas’ Pornvipa Sakdee to a three-hole advantage through the first six holes.

The Lobos played some of their best golf on the day on par 5’s and posted the sixth best score on the long holes in the tournament on Tuesday. UNM also fared well on the front nine holes with a team score of six strokes over par. For the day, New Mexico was even on the last four holes of the front nine.

A crucial hole in Molle’s draw came on the 17th hole. The French sophomore was one of only four players in the entire field to birdie the par 4.  She followed up her birdie with steady play in the front nine with seven consecutive pars.

The match play format mirrors the opening rounds of the NCAA Championships this year. You start off in a stroke-play format and the top eight teams advance to play match play.

New Mexico will face fellow Mountain West program, the Nevada WolfPack, on Wednesday in the final day of action of the tournament.
