RENO, Nev. – For the second straight day, the University of New Mexico engaged in a pitcher’s duel with the Nevada Wolf Pack. Unfortunately for the Lobos, however, after winning 3-1 on Friday night, they lost by the same score Saturday afternoon.
UNM (11-5, 5-3) held the Wolf Pack (14-4, 6-2) to just three hits on the day but couldn’t muster enough offense to take advantage. In fact, after Austin Byler led off the bottom of the first with a home run for Nevada, Lobo pitching held one of the top offenses in the nation to just two singles the rest of the game.
The Lobos had multiple opportunities to take the lead or tie the game late, but they were unable to get the key hit they needed and left four men in scoring position. UNM was just 1-for-12 with runners on base, and that lone hit was an infield single.
Jared Holley’s solo home run in the third inning, the first home run of his career, provided UNM’s only run. Chris DeVito and Andre Vigil added doubles, while Dalton Bowers and Cory Voss’ singles comprised the rest of UNM’s offense.
Colton Thomson allowed just one run on two hits and a walk in 3.1 innings with three strikeouts, but his start was cut short by an apparent lower-body injury. Carson Schneider, Preston Ryan, Taylor Duree and Alex Estrella combined to limit the Wolf Pack to one hit over the next 4.2 innings. Schneider (2-1) was charged with his first loss of the season.
The rubber match between the two teams will be Sunday at 2 p.m. MT, and it will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network at GoLobos.com.
Notes: UNM once again played without both Sam Haggerty and Danny Collier, who are both nursing injuries.
