ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The No. 48 University of New Mexico women’s tennis team is returning home this weekend to play host to in-state rival New Mexico State on Saturday at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium at 12 p.m. MT.
“We are a little road weary after playing 6 nationally ranked opponents on the road over the past 4 weeks, so it is very exciting to be back home,” head coach Erica Jasper said. “We love playing our new facility, the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium, and there are no better fan than Lobo fans!”
No. 48 New Mexico
The Lobos, who have played their last six matches on the road, are finally back and ready to compete in front of their home crowd. UNM had a challenging road stretch against some tough teams, but finished with good results. The Lobos claimed wins over No. 64 Denver and No. 73 Utah and dropped matches to Colorado, No. 67 BYU, No. 8 Oklahoma State, and No. 24 Oklahoma. The Lobos are now 9-5 on the season. UNM holds an impressive 7-1 home record.
New Mexico State
The Aggies (7-4) have won their last three matches picking up wins over Western Michigan, Stephen F. Austin, and UT-Permian Basin. NMSU will certainly be motivated by revenge when playing the Lobos as UNM currently leads the all-time series 32-6. Additionally, the Lobos handily defeated the Aggies 6-1 last season.
Head Coach: Ivan Hernandez
Season Record: 7-4
Conference: Western Athletic Conference
“New Mexico State is playing good team tennis once again this year,” Jasper said. “Their depth is very good and they are always feisty competitors at every spot. As a rivalry match, there will be a lot of emotions in the match; we’ll have to continue to play good smart basics in doubles and singles to put ourselves in position to win. We hope to see all the Lobo faithful out on Saturday!”
There will not be live scoring available for this match.
