ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico baseball team keeps inching its way to the Top 25. D1Baseball.com listed the Lobos as one of the other teams it considered for its rankings this week, and national writers Aaron Fitt and Kendall Rogers both said the Lobos were the first team out in their weekly chat on Monday. Rogers also listed UNM as one of five teams that raised its profile last weekend.
With a 9-3 record, including two wins over Oregon State and two wins last weekend over San Diego State, it appears that outside of D1Baseball, many sites are overlooking the work the Lobos are doing. Oregon State (13-3) is ranked in four separate national polls, and is all the way up at No. 17 according to PerfectGame.org. Both the Beavers and San Diego State (13-3) are ranked in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll, while the Lobos aren’t even receiving votes despite handing those teams four of their combined six losses.
It certainly seems like they’re being overlooked, but all the Lobos can do is keep winning on the field. They will have plenty of opportunities for more big wins in the coming weeks. Following their two-game series against Stephen F. Austin that begins Tuesday night UNM will play 12 of its next 15 games against teams that are nationally ranked.
