ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After posting a 2-0 record over the weekend with a 1.62 earned run average, senior Carrie Sheehan has been tabbed as this week’s Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, her second career honor. The conference announced the honor Tuesday morning. The pitching honor is the second honor this season in three weeks for the Lobos.
“Carrie put up some great numbers for us in the circle this weekend,” said head coach Erica Beach. “And she got us some pretty big wins. She was incredibly effective and kept the batters off balance. She showed great tenacity and fight in all of her innings of work and I couldn’t be prouder.”
Sheehan started off the weekend for the Lobos, battling to a 2-1 pitcher’s duel win over Houston. Houston has made NCAA Regional appearances the last four years. She allowed one run off just four hits in six innings of work while striking out four Cougars. Sheehan retired the side in first, third and sixth innings and was able to get out of a jam in the second as Houston had runners in scoring position.
The Las Vegas, Nevada native not only opened the weekend with a win for the Lobos but also closed out the weekend with a win for the Lobos.
On Sunday, Sheehan pitched her first complete game of the season against Texas A&M Corpus Christi, a 6-2 win for the Lobos. She allowed two runs off five hits while walking two and striking out three.
Sheehan kept the Islanders off balance throughout the game as she was able to get out of threatening frames and retired the side in the third, fifth and the final seventh inning.
With two wins on the weekend, Sheehan is now 3-1 on the season. She owns a 3.41 earned run average and has recorded 17 strikeouts in 26.2 innings of work. She has 18 wins in her career.
The Lobos went 4-1 over the weekend at the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic. They are now 8-7 on the season which is a six-game gain from last season’s 2-13 start through the first 15 games. The Lobos are off this weekend but return to action for their home debut on Tuesday, March 3 for a doubleheader with UTEP starting at noon.
