ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico volleyball team will be holding its 9th annual Grass Bash event April 18-19 on Johnson Field.

This event is one of the largest grass volleyball tournaments in the state and the tournament has made some new additions. There are two new divisions added to the tournament, including Co-ed Rec Fours and Sitting Volleyball.

The Lobos have also partnered with a new foundation, the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation. This foundation is a philanthropic organization that provides opportunities for families and children with special needs. All proceeds will benefit the UNM Volleyball Scholarship Fund and the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation.

“The UNM volleyball staff and team are thrilled to be partnered with the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation this year for our ninth annual Grass Bash,” said assistant Lisa Beauchene. “With this great organization, we are able to bridge the gap between our volleyball event and theirs while also helping promote this foundation that provides opportunities for families and children with special needs.

“Because of our new partnership, we’re starting a new division: Sitting Volleyball, played by athletes with disabilities such as spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, brain injuries, amputees and strokes. Sitting volleyball is an event in the Paralympic Games that requires the athlete to keep buttock on the floor and hot over a net that it 1.15 meters high. We hope that with the addition of this division, we will give an opportunity to a new segment of volleyball fans to play volleyball.”

There will be thousands of dollars in prizes and with the foundation there will be opportunities including court sponsorships ($500), which names a court by the sponsor and puts branding on the net and sign sponsorship ($100), that allows for a business to have a banner on the field.

Also new this year is online registration. This gives a participant the opportunity to register for his/her team for both days. It is also set up to pay by credit card. Click here to register for the event.

The costs for the tournament are as follows: adults are $25 dollars, students are $20. An additional $5 fee is charged on the day of the event if you haven’t registered ahead of time. This year, check-in times on Sunday will be staggered. All junior divisions will check in between 7 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. Play will begin at 8 a.m.

All adult divisions will check in between 8 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. Play will begin at 9 a.m. For Saturday, check-in time for all teams will be from 7-7:45 a.m. and play will begin at 8 a.m.
