ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team is making history at its home debut Saturday when it takes on Northern Arizona at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium.
The Lobos’ 10 a.m. MT match versus the Lumberjacks will be the first-ever collegiate dual match played at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium, which opened last year.
UNM kicked off the season with a challenging 11-match road stretch, so this Lobo squad is certainly eager to hit their home turf and play in front of their fans for the first time this spring.
The No. 63 Lobos, who have already squared off against four nationally ranked opponents this season, tallied a 5-6 overall record while playing away from home.
“We’re really excited about this match with NAU for obvious reasons,” interim head coach Bart Scott said. “We’re honored to play the first-ever college dual match at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium and we’re excited to finally get the chance to play in front of our home crowd after so many weeks on the road.”
However the Lobos can’t let the excitement of the weekend allow them to lose focus as they have a hungry NAU team that will be looking for a battle. Head coach Ki Kroll is bringing a lineup that is eager for a win over UNM as the Lobos currently hold a perfect 26-0 all-time record against the Lumberjacks. Additionally, UNM posted a 7-0 victory over NAU in their match up last season.
NAU is currently 2-2 on the season tallying wins over UNM rival New Mexico State and Mountain West Conference member Nevada.
“We’re battle tested and definitely looking to get out there and prove a few things to ourselves,” Scott added. “I’m excited to take in the atmosphere and see what the guys can produce.”
Admission to the match is free. For more information on the recently built Lobo tennis stadium, head to the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium facility page.
