Colorado Springs, Colo. — University of New Mexico’s student-athletes lived up to that title once again as a school record 61 fall student-athletes were honored as Mountain West All-Academic honorees.  The 61 tied with Utah State for the most by any one institution in the conference for the fall.

The Lobos bested their previous record of 60 fall MW All-Academic honorees, which occurred in 2010-11.  Last year New Mexico had 57 fall Mountain West All-Academic selections, and the Lobos overall had 181 picks to lead the league.  That total was the most by a single institution since BYU had 235 in the 2010-11 season.

To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.

“Graduating student-athletes is the most important thing that we do, and it’s a testament to our student-athletes and our coaches to have that many honorees,” said Vice President of Athletics Paul Krebs.  “Certainly the work done by Henry Villegas, his staff, and the support we receive from faculty and staff on campus contribute to this success.”

Three sports had record totals, with the football team setting a program record with 20 selections.  The previous best was 18 back in the 2007-08 season, and under Bob Davie, the Lobos have now had 50 players selected in the last three seasons, the best three-season run for the squad.  Men’s cross country (9) and women’s cross country (8) each tied program highs, and women’s cross country tied for the most All-Academic selections in that sport.

The women’s soccer team had 16 selections, the most among the 12 Mountain West soccer teams, and the volleyball team had eight selections, tying for fourth in that sport and the third most for that program.
