HENDERSON, Nev. – The University of New Mexico softball team fell in its final game of the weekend, an 8-2 loss to Seattle U on Sunday morning.

The Lobos struggled at the plate and in the circle the first few innings. As the designated visiting team, the Lobos saw went scoreless until the third inning. But Seattle U had already plated seven runs off a couple of home runs including a grand slam.

In the third inning, sophomore Michala Erickson opened up the Lobo scoring with a solo shot over the center field wall, her first of the season and sixth in her career.

Seattle U capped its scoring for the game in the fourth inning, adding a run. The Lobos threatened again in the seventh as Heimburg doubled to right field with one out. She then scored on the next play as Shelbie Franc singled to left and drew a throw to second to score Heimburg. But the run wasn’t enough to push the game longer.

Tess McPherson suffered the loss in the circle, her third on the season. She allowed four runs, all earned, on five hits in one inning of work. Sophomore Krissy Fortner pitched in relief for the second day in a row. She allowed four runs, all earned, on three hits in five innings of work. She recorded three strikeouts but walked four.

At the plate, the Lobos pounded out seven hits with Franc leading the way, going 2-for-4.

The Lobos are now 4-6 on the season and will head to Houston, Texas next weekend for a round-robin weekend with Texas Corpus Christi, Illinois and the University of Houston.
