ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After being a part of six MW championships in nearly six seasons as the athletic trainer for the University of New Mexico men’s basketball program, Nate Burney is leaving the program to pursue professional opportunities in the private sector closer to his home state of Kansas. Burney, affectionately known as “Nate-O”, was a favorite of student-athletes, coaches and staff alike.
“We are very sad to see Nate leave our program after being such a big part of our success over the last five and a half years,” said head coach Craig Neal. “Nate was a key component of six MW championships, and I can’t thank him enough for everything he did for our program. He will be missed, but we are excited for this new professional opportunity for him and his family. Nate will always be a New Mexico Lobo.”
Burney started as the men’s basketball trainer at UNM in August of 2009 after spending two years as an athletic training graduate assistant while earning his Master’s degree from the University of New Mexico.
“I am very appreciative and thankful for being a part of the Lobo family over the past few years,” said Nate Burney. “I am going to miss this program and everyone that is a part of it. I wish the team the best moving forward.”
