ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico football coach Bob Davie has announced the addition of running back Daryl Chestnut to the program. Chestnut is enrolled for the spring semester and will be eligible to participate in spring drills for the Lobos.

He will have three years of eligibility remaining at New Mexico after attending Coffeyville in Coffeyville, Kansas.

“Daryl is an explosive back that was highly recruited,” Davie said. “You see him do a lot of great things on film and he has some versatility to make plays in many different ways. He has the potential to be a great addition to our offense.”

Chestnut originally signed with Indiana University out of high school after receiving offers from Florida State, Texas Tech, West Virginia and many others.

Originally from Miami, FL., Daryl played at Christopher Columbus High School where he rushed for 1,208 yards and 14 touchdowns during his senior campaign. He averaged 10.9 yards per carry and was named first team All-Dade County.  He was rated the No. 8 all-purpose back in the country by rivals.com in 2013. As both a junior and a senior he helped Columbus to region championships in 2011 and 2012.

As a junior he rushed for 526 yards on just 44 carries with eight touchdowns.  He averaged 12.0 yards per carry.

He is the son of Daryl Chestnut and Alva Strachan.
