COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of New Mexico senior guard Deshawn Delaney has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week following a pair of Lobo victories versus New Mexico State and Central Arkansas. Delaney averaged 19.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals, 2.0 assists and 1.0 blocks per game for the week. He also shot 58.6 percent (17-of-29) from the field for the week, including 40.0 percent (2-of-5) from three-point range. It is the first player of the week honor of Delaney’s career and the first for a New Mexico player this season.
The Chicago native opened the week with a career night against the Central Arkansas Bears in WisePies Arena aka The Pit. He finished with a career-high 22 points to go along with a personal-best 13 rebounds to go along with three assists, three steals and two blocks. It was the first 20-point, 10-rebound performance of his career and just his second double-double as a Lobo.
Delaney followed up his performance versus UCA with 17 points, seven rebounds and four blocks in UNM’s Rio Grande Rivalry win at New Mexico State. The senior set a career high in minutes played against the aggies with 34. The NMSU win marked the Lobos’ seventh consecutive win in Las Cruces.
Delaney and the rest of his Lobo teammates will round out non-conference play with at Grand Canyon on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 7 p.m. in Phoenix.
