The back-to-back wins over UTEP (Sunday) and Cal Poly (Thursday) were the first for the Lobos since March 4 and March 7, 2014 when they beat Air Force 76-62 on the road and San Diego State 62-46 at home.
The Lobos’ 84 points were a season high; their previous season high was 72 vs. UTEP. It also was the highest-scoring game in the Yvonne Sanchez era, eclipsing the 81 UNM scored against North Texas on Nov. 23, 2012.
The 16-point margin of victory was the highest this season, surpassing the 72-57 win over UTEP and was the largest since a 62-46 win over San Diego State on March 7, 2014.
UNM had 38 bench points, establishing a season high (the previous high was 27 vs. UC Riverside on Nov. 29).
The Lobos had a season-high 17 assists, two better than the previous high of 15 set Sunday vs. UTEP. They had season highs in field goals (28), field-goal attempts (61), free throws (24) and free-throw attempts (31).
Four players scored career highs in points (Khadijah Shumpert, Alexa Chavez, Jayda Bovero and Kenya Pye) and another (Brea Mitchell) had a season high (see below).
The Lobos used a 23-8 run spanning the first and second halves to turn a 36-28 deficit into a 51-44 lead. They had a 9-0 run to turn a 36-28 first-half deficit into a 37-36 halftime lead.
Individual:
Junior post Khadijah Shumpert had 11 first-half points. She has scored in double figures in eight of the 10 Lobo games this season. Her 27 points are a career high, surpassing her previous high of 22 (vs. Boise State on Feb. 12, 2014). She led the team in scoring for the first time this season.
Senior guard Antiesha Brown extended her consecutive free-throw streak to 18.
Junior guard Brea Mitchell broke out of a slump, hitting two first-half 3-pointers. She was 4-of-22 from behind the arc (18.2 percent) coming into the game. She had three 3-pointers for the game and scored a career high 11 points.
Alexa Chavez’s 13 points marked a career high and eclipsed her previous high of 11 vs. Wyoming on Jan. 8, 2014. Her previous season high was eight vs. DePaul on Nov. 16.
Freshman forward Jayda Bovero scored a career-high seven points and scored her first career 3-pointer.
Freshman guard Kenya Pye scored a career-high five points.
