ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico men’s soccer program earned the Team Academic Award from the NSCAA Monday for the third straight season. Overall, its the 11th time under head coach Jeremy Fishbein the team has earned the award, and it’s the highest academic team award a program can earn.
“I’m really proud of the guys efforts in the classroom,” Fishbein said. “This is the standard of the program: acadmic, social and athletic excellence. (Associate head coach) Paul Souders has done a tremendous job overseeing the academic component of our program. He’s a big part of this success.”
In order to qualify a team must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. The Lobos set a program record with a 3.48 GPA to earn the award for the 2013-14 academic year. Josh Dye, Niko Hansen, Nick Miele and Chris Wehan previously were named CoSIDA Academic All-District, and Dye, Miele and Jason Beaulieu earned All-Academic honors from Conference USA. UNM’s GPA was the highest among all C-USA programs.
The women’s team also earned the award, which means UNM is one of 188 schools in the nation to have both programs honored.
