ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico will not retain women’s soccer coach Kit Vela for the 2015 season, Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs announced Thursday.

“At this time, we have decided to not renew the contract for Kit Vela,” Krebs said. “We appreciate the efforts of Kit, Jorge (assistant coach Vela) and her staffs over the years in raising the profile of our women’s soccer program. We will conduct a national search, and with our facilities, our community, and our commitment to developing a championship women’s soccer program, we are confident that we can hire a coach to bring our program to that next level.”

Vela compiled a 122-104-45 record during her 14 seasons as Lobo coach. She guided UNM to a 10-6-2 record in 2014, finishing third during the Mountain West regular season. The team advanced to the semifinals of the MW Tournament before bowing out to No. 2 seed Wyoming 2-1.

Vela won two Mountain West championships in 2010 and 2011, as well as the Mountain West Tournament championship in 2011. UNM made NCAA College Cup appearances in both those seasons.
