ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Junior midfielder Ben McKendry of the University of New Mexico men’s soccer team was named Second Team All-America by College Sports Madness the website announced Wednesday.
A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, McKendry totaled two goals and two assists this season. His play earned him All-Conference USA first team honors as his true contributions to the Lobos aren’t tallied solely on goals and assists. He controlled the pace and play of game from his central midfield position, and his 1,358 minutes were second among all UNM midfielders behind only Josh Dye.
McKendry was named MVP of the TLC Plumbing & Utility Invitational on Sept. 21, and later in the season he scored the fastest goal in school history when he converted a penalty kick just 16 seconds into the Lobos’ match against West Virginia.
McKendry was one of three C-USA players to be named, along with Charlotte’s Kyle Parker (second team) and South Carolina’s Mahamoudou Kaba (third team).
The Lobos finished the regular season No. 22 in the NSCAA poll.
