ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico volleyball team will be adding a setter for the 2015 season. National Letter of Intent signee Carson Heilborn will be joining the Lobos next fall and head volleyball coach Jeff Nelson is excited about having her on the squad.
“She is an outstanding setter,” said Nelson. “She is very well trained. She plays in a great club ball situation up in Puget Sound. She is a great athlete and great leader. I’m really excited about the package that she brings to our program and the potential she brings to raise the level of our program.”
The Auburn, Washington native has been a four-year starter at Auburn Riverside High School and has been the captain the past two seasons. The Ravens were ranked No. 1 in the state to start the 2014 season and have had a pretty successful year so far as they were the SPSL Champions and District Champions. She was named MVP of the league this year and was selected to first team of the league, making her a three-time first team selection.
“I am so excited to come to the University of New Mexico and play volleyball,” said Heilborn. “It will be challenging and exhilarating to practice and compete at such a high level.”
The six-foot setter played for the Puget Sound Volleyball Academy which took ninth at nationals in 2011 and placed first in the Patriot Division in 2012.
It’s not just about volleyball for Heilborn as she was a 2013 National Honor Roll Student along with WIAA Scholar-Athlete in 2011-12.
“I chose to play at UNM because the coaching staff is amazing and all of the players are so nice, welcoming and very talented. As a setter, I am looking forward to learning from two coaches that are such experience and gifted setters. UNM also has a lot of opportunities in the fields of study I am interested in, such as, art, education and psychology.”
