University of New Mexico senior golfer Gavin Green will defend his title at the Sun Bowl Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic this weekend in El Paso, Texas.

The field includes 20 players that earned All-America honors in 2013-14. Green earned second-team All-America honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America last season.

The field includes 14 of the top 100 amateur golfers in the world, according to the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Green is currently No. 18 in the WAGR.

Alabama’s Robby Shelton, the No. 3 player, is the highest ranked golfer in the event.

Green had four top-10 performances in the fall, capped by his third consecutive victory at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on the UNM Championship Course in September.

Throughout the years, many Sun Bowl Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic competitors have gone on to pursue successful careers in the Professional Golfers’ Association of America and on the PGA Tour. Some of the past champions include Webb Simpson (2007), Ricky Barnes (2000), Notah Begay (1994), David Duval (1991), Matt Kuchar (1999), Davis Love III (1984), Chris Nallen (2003), Jerry Pate (1974), Nicholas Thompson (2004) and Tiger Woods (1995).

The Lobo team has completed its fall season and next will play in the Arizona Intercollegiate on Jan. 26-27 in Tucson, Ariz.
