COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico men’s and women’s cross-country teams claimed the top spots in the Mountain West midseason coaches’ polls released Wednesday morning.
The vote has the preseason coaches’ favorites keeping hold of the top honors in the conference, with the No. 11 women claiming the top spot outright and the No. 16 men sharing the honor with No. 22 Colorado State.
The women’s squad, under eighth-year head coach Joe Franklin, has won six consecutive MW titles, while the men have won five years in a row.
In the men’s poll, New Mexico and Colorado State each received four first-place votes and 45 total points. Air Force collected 35 points for third, with Boise State (32 points) and Wyoming (27) rounding out the top five. Utah State (19), Fresno State (12) and San José State (nine) concluded the men’s poll.
On the women’s side, New Mexico tallied nine first-place votes for a total of 99 points to earn the top spot. Boise State collected one first-place vote and 87 points to claim second place. Colorado State received the final one first-place vote and earned 77 points for third, followed by Wyoming with 70 points. Air Force (61 points), Utah State (51), Nevada (50), Fresno State (41), San Diego State (34), San José State (18), and UNLV (17) placed fifth through 11th, respectively.
The 2014 Mountain West Cross Country Championships will be hosted by Fresno State University at Woodward Park in Fresno, California on Friday, Oct. 31.
The Lobos will return to action next weekend when they travel to the Wisconsin adidas Invitational in Madison, Wis., on Oct. 17.
