ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico baseball team closes out its fall practice schedule with its annual intrasquad five-game Cherry-Silver Series at Lobo Field beginning Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 5 p.m. All five games will be free and open to the public.
The series gives players fighting to make the final roster one last chance to impress head coach Ray Birmingham and his assistants: Ken Jacome, Dan Spencer and Tony Cappuccilli.
Silver won the series last year behind strong performances by John Pustay, Sam Haggerty, Ryan Padilla and Lane Milligan among others.
This year’s series will feature a string of honorary guest coaches, featuring numerous former players as well as boosters and Dugout Club members.
Ronnie Meng – Ronnie played for UNM from 1992 to 1995. On March 19, 1995, vs. Nebraska he became just the second Lobo to ever record six hits in a single game. He was part of 130 career wins for the Lobos, sixth most in school history.
Mike Fietz – Mike is a Managing Member for Twilight Homes and is an ardent supporter of Lobo Baseball.
Donny Sevieri – Donny played for UNM from 1999-2002 and was an All-Mountain West performer in 2000 after hitting 29 doubles.
Mickey Rogers – Mickey is the owner of several Fuddruckers locations throughout New Mexico and Texas and is a huge supporter of Lobo Baseball
Scott Creagan – Doing everything from hiring athletes at his business, Graphic Connection, to donating to the program, Scott has been involved in Lobo Baseball for over 20 years. Since Coach Ray Birmingham has taken over, there has been a great emphasis on taking the program to the next level and Scott enjoys being involved both personally and through his company. With utmost respect for both the coaching staff and the hardworking players, he is honored to get a chance to participate as a coach for the Cherry-Silver series.
Alex Allbritton – Alex played for UNM from 2010 to 2013 and is the only Lobo that was involved in turning two triple plays on defense. A two-time All-Mountain West performer and four-time Academic All-Mountain West honoree, he helped UNM win 129 games over his four-year career. A selfless player who holds UNM’s career record for sacrifice bunts (31) and ranks second in sac flies (18), he was drafted in the 21st round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Matt Hibbitts – Matt has both played for and coached the Lobos. A player from 2007 to 2008, Matt hit back-to-back-to-back home runs with Daniel Stovall and Ian Hollick vs. Hawai’i-Hilo on April 28, 2007. As an assistant coach in 2013 and 2014 he helped UNM win back-to-back Mountain West regular-season titles. He is currently the head coach at Manzano High School.
Ernie Blackstone – A former letter-winner who played for UNM from 1977-79, Ernie has been instrumental in helping the program. Back in the late 80s when the program was in danger of being cut, he worked with Tom Dunn and David Hunt to organize the Legends for Lobos event that helped raise funds to keep the program. More recently he has helped organize and run UNM’s annual golf tournament fundraiser at Sandia Golf Club.
Rocky Hughes and Samantha Gunn – Rocky and his daughter, Samantha, both work for Land Rover Albuquerque and Land Rover Santa Fe and are proud Lobo supporters. Rocky takes great pride in giving back to the community and helping student-athletes make it through their years as a Lobo. They were part of the golf committee that helped raise over $25,000 for the 2014-2015 Lobo Baseball team at the recent golf tournament fundraiser. Rocky and Samantha are proud and happy to help out Coach Birmingham and Lobo Baseball.
Rick Ronquillo – Rick played for UNM from 1979 to 1983 and has been a part of Lobo Baseball ever since. The head of the program’s alumni group and a member of the Alumni Letterman’s Board, Rick is a constant presence at any baseball fundraiser or get-together and an ever-faithful supporter of the team.
Sam Bregman – Sam wore the Cherry and Silver for coach Vince Cappelli in 1980 and 1981 and is a proud supporter of Lobo Baseball.
Josh Ayala – Josh was a member of the 2000 Mountain West regular-season championship team and continues to support the program to this day.
Larry Rainosek – Larry and his wife, Dorothy, are the owners of Frontier Restaurant as well as Golden Pride BBQ Chicken & Ribs in Albuquerque. Their two children both attended UNM, and the Rainosek family has a long history of supporting UNM as well as many community organizations, and they received the NM Association of Fundraising Professionals Outstanding Leaders in Philanthropy Award in November 2009.
Larry Harrison – Larry played for the Lobos from 1980 to 1983 and is the all-time program leader in games played with 244, fully 18 more than anyone else. He is fifth all-time in runs, seventh in hits, and he is the program’s career triples leader –and third in NCAA history — with 31 three-base hits. He was UNM’s original Iron Man, setting a school record of 124 straight starts that lasted over a decade.
Jeff Grady – A powerful hitter, Jeff played for UNM from 2002 to 2005 and hit 34 home runs, eighth most in Lobo history. He currently works with Raylee Homes and is helping with the design and construction of Lobo Baseball’s new clubhouse.
Dee Dennis – Dee played for UNM in 1999 and 2000 and helped the Lobos to a conference championship in the Mountain West’s inaugural season by being named All-Conference in 2000. Dee now is the Managing Member of DKD Electric, which was responsible for the installation of lights at Lobo Field.
Jeff Gilkey – Jeff played for the Lobos from 1983 through 1985 and is now the general manager for Costco Wholesale. He is an ardent Lobo Baseball supporter, a member of the dugout club, an annual participant in the program’s golf tournament fundraiser, and an active member of the Albuquerque baseball community. He coaches a USSSA 13u team through the Albuquerque Baseball Academy.
Scott Hoover – Scott played for the Lobos in 1984 and hit .291 and drove in 17 runs for UNM. He currently works for Business Solutions and is a proud supporter of Lobo Baseball.
