TULSA, Okla. – University of New Mexico’s Samir Iftikhar claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Virginia Tech’s Amerigo Contini in the first round of the Main Draw at the 2014 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men’s All-American Championships being played at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
“I felt good out there today,” Iftikhar said. “I was happy that I was able to make the necessary tactical adjustments early enough to get on top of my opponent. He’s a good player and I’m happy to come away with the win. I’m looking forward to the next round.”
Iftikhar, the only Lobo competing in main draw action, had to make a few modifications to his match strategy early on, but a few adjustments seemed to be all that he needed to claim two quick sets. Iftikhar took an early lead with a 6-3 win in the first set. Contini battled in the second set, but Iftikhar pulled ahead to claim the match point.
“Sam came out too defensive for an indoor match against a huge hitter,” head coach Bart Scott said. “However, he worked hard to be more aggressive and turned the match midway through the first set and never looked back. He’ll need to continue to stay aggressive tomorrow.”
Iftikhar will compete in the round of 32 on Friday against Drake’s Alen Salibasic who is currently sitting at No. 37 in the ITA Preseason Singles rankings.
