ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico senior defender Riley McGovern was named Conference USA’s Co-Defensive Player of the Week the league office announced Monday. He shared the honor with Kentucky’s sophomore defenseman Jordan Wilson.
McGovern helped UNM post back-to-back 2-0 victories last week from his spot at right back, playing all 180 minutes. Along with his fellow defensemen, he limited Florida Atlantic and Missouri State to a combined six shots, only one on frame. McGovern also earned his first assist of the season on Oniel Fisher’s game-winning goal against Missouri State Sunday night. The Farmington, N.M, native has played every minute for UNM this year, playing a vital hand in the Lobos’ three-game shutout streak. UNM is second in C-USA with seven shutouts (t-7th NCAA) and a 0.55 goals-against average (15th NCAA), surrendering just seven goals in 12 matches.
This is McGovern’s first career honor and the fourth for UNM this season. Fisher was named Offensive Player of the Week Sept. 2, Josh Goss earned the same honor on Sept. 8, and Niko Hansen earned the award on Oct. 6.
