In Reno, Nev., give the Lobos four for the road.

Redshirt freshman defender Emily Chavez pushed a rebound over the goal line in the second half for the game’s only score and junior goalkeeper Ulrich recorded her second consecutive shutout as the University of New Mexico women’s soccer team defeated Nevada 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

UNM (5-4-2, 3-1-2 Mountain West) extended its unbeaten streak on the road to four games – the Lobos are 3-0-1 traveling in the conference this season. It’s the first time since 2010 that the Lobos have gone unbeaten in the MW four straight games.

“I’m really proud of the way our team competed this weekend,” coach Kit Vela said. “We had to juggle our lineup again because of injuries, but our kids played with a lot of determination on both ends of the field.”

The Lobos got the upper hand Sunday when true freshman Alexa Cabrales threw the ball in on the near side deep on the Wolf Pack side. A defender for Nevada (4-10-1, 1-5) headed the ball straight up into the air and in a crowded goal box.

Wolf Pack goalkeeper Devin Byrar tried to knock the ball away but managed only to knock it back up into the air. The ball came down near the left post, where Chavez was waiting – still in a crowd. Nevada had a defender in the net, and another one falling over Bryar in the net.

Chavez hit the ball that Bryar stopped, but she was behind the line. After a bit of confusion, officials allowed the goal.

After that, the Lobos kept control of the ball, finishing with a 14-6 edge in shots and a 9-2 edge in shots on goal.

Ulrich moved her record to 5-2-0 on the season.
