TUCSON, Ariz. – The Lobos are heading home from the 2014 Wildcat Invitational with two singles championship titles as both Rachana Bhat and Susan Baklini claimed the final match of their respective brackets on Sunday afternoon.
Bhat squared off against freshman Hanna Sohn from host school Arizona in the Cardinal Draw championship. Bhat took an early lead with a 7-6 victory in the first set, but Sohn replied with a close 6-4 win to take the match into a third set. After playing two close sets, Bhat took control and claimed the last set, 6-1, to win the match and the singles title. The UNM sophomore is now 8-2 in singles play for the fall tournament season.
Baklini defeated Texas State’s Maddie Moore for the White Draw championship title. Baklini and Moore also battled it out through three tough sets with the Lobo sophomore eventually coming out on top, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 10-7. Baklini holds a 4-3 singles record for the fall season.
Bhat and Baklini did not find as much success in doubles play on Sunday as they fell to Marquette’s Ali Dawson and Aleeza Kanner, 8-2, in the Wildcat Draw consolation play.
Freshman Sharon Coone and Mississippi State’s Naomi Tran teamed up for a win over TSU’s Katy Collins and Moore, 8-6, in Cardinal doubles consolation.
The Lobos’ do not compete again until they host the 2014 USTA/ITA Mountain Regional Championships, Oct. 15-19.
