ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team is hosting the 2014 Balloon Fiesta Invitational this weekend, Oct. 3-5, at the recently built McKinnon Family Tennis Complex and the newly resurfaced Linda Estes Tennis Complex.
Joining UNM for the tournament is Northern Arizona, Air Force, New Mexico State, and Denver. The three-day event will include two different singles draws of 16 (Cherry Singles and Silver Singles) and one doubles draw of 16 (Cherry Doubles).
James Hignett, Rodolfo Jauregui, Shunji Hirooka, and Bryan Cunningham will represent the Lobos at their home event. Hignett and Jauregui will compete in the Cherry draw while Hirooka and Cunningham compete in the Silver draw. In doubles action, Hignett and Jauregui will team up for the weekend while Hirooka and Cunningham make up the second Lobo duo.
This tournament is the Lobos’ last fall event before they head to the 2014 USTA/ITA Mountain Regional Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., Oct. 15-19. NAU, NMSU, AFA, and DU will also be at the regional event, so the Balloon Fiesta Invitational will allow all of the participating teams to gain some early experience against each another before heading to Las Vegas.
Admission to the Balloon Fiesta Invitational is free. This home event provides a great opportunity for Lobo fans to come and support UNM in the preseason and check out the new tennis complex.
Matches will begin each day at 10 a.m. MTN on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
