ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – It was a full afternoon of golf for the University of New Mexico men’s basketball program on Monday followed by an evening of reflection and celebration. The Lobos received their championship rings from their record-breaking third Mountain West Tournament championship in a row as they honored last year’s team. It was a night cap to the program’s annual Sixth Man Club golf tournament.

“I can’t thank all of you in this room enough,” said head coach Craig Neal. “We have a very special program here at the University of New Mexico. We have great support in Albuquerque and throughout our state. Everyone in this room is a crucial part of what we do. New Mexico is a state that’s proud of this program, and we are proud to represent our great state.”

The private reception included silent auctions of various special Lobo Basketball items and gifts. Coach Neal honored all student-athletes, coaches, staff and managers from last year’s championship team and presented them with their championship rings. For some staff and players, it was the fifth ring earned in service of the program.

“This is what tonight is all about,” Neal told the room as he held up a ring. “We have set a standard here over the last seven years.”

New Mexico will unofficially open the season with the annual Lobo Howl set for Friday, October 17 in The Pit.  The team will take to Bob King Court for the first time for their exhibition versus Western New Mexico on Saturday, November 1.
